Aerosol, Clouds and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure Implementation Project (ACTRIS-IMP)

The support project ACTRIS IMP was funded by UEFISCDI under the “Supporting Participation in Horizon 2020” call (PN‑III‑CEI‑SUPORT‑PO‑2020), and was launched to follow up an earlier Horizon 2020 infrastructure grant (ACTRIS PPP). Its main goal was to help transition ACTRIS from a project-based network to a centralized pan‑European research infrastructure, in full alignment with the European ACTRIS RI strategy.

The ACTRIS IMP project (Aerosol, Clouds and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure Implementation Project) was financed by the European Commission under Horizon 2020 (Grant 871115, H2020‑INFRADEV‑2018‑2020 / 2019‑2), and was scheduled for a four-year duration starting 1 January 2020. It built on the achievements of ACTRIS PPP, and was designed to increase national partnerships and to support INOE’s Remote Sensing Department by consolidating international collaborations and disseminating ACTRIS IMP results at both national and international scientific events.

Execution Phase 1 (January–December 2021) aimed to expand and strengthen collaboration with national and international partners. Key activities included:

  • Organizing an ACTRIS‑RO meeting on 1–2 September 2021 at the Magurele Centre for Atmospheric and Radiation Studies (MARS), hosted by INOE2000 and attended by UBB, UAIC, UGAL, INCAS, and INOESY SRL;
  • Participating in remote and in-person working group meetings and seminars (e.g., ACTRIS European seminars, COST‑related events) throughout 2021;
  • Contributing to international scientific conferences in 2021, such as the European Aerosol Conference (EAC2021, 30 August–3 September) and the European Lidar Conference (ELC2021, 16–18 November).

Execution Phase 2 (January–December 2022) focused on updating research infrastructure concepts and increasing INOE’s scientific visibility. This phase included:

  • Two ACTRIS‑RO consortium meetings: 26–29 January 2022 in Cheile Grădiștei, Brașov; and 8–9 September 2022 on the Măneciu Experimental Platform in Prahova, hosted by INCAS, with participation from all national ACTRIS facilities;
  • The INOE Remote Sensing Department taking part in 42 working meetings with international experts—including ACTRIS EU seminars and COST projects—held both online and onsite;
  • Attendance at 12 international scientific events, including Virtual JATAC Data Workshop; 1st ACTRIS Science Conference; “Spațiu și Securitate pentru Europa de Est” exhibition; 2022 Living Planet Symposium; Scientific Research and Education in the Air Force (AFASES 2022).

Execution Phase 3 (January–December 2023) aimed to further consolidate INOE’s capacity within the ACTRIS infrastructure. Activities included:

  • An online ACTRIS‑RO meeting held on 8 June 2023 via Webex, organized by INOE 2000, with participation from RADO Bucharest (INOE), RADO Cluj (UBB), RADO‑Galați (UGAL), RADO‑Iași (UAIC), and ATMOSLAB (INCAS). Presentations covered the first General Assembly of ACTRIS ERIC (5–6 June 2023, Helsinki), including governance, data policy, access regulations, recruitment, and procurement;
  • Numerous working meetings with international experts throughout 2023—covering ACTRIS ERIC General Council meetings, CARS ARES webinars, and COST programmes HARMONIA CA21119 and PROBE CA 18235—held both online and onsite;
  • Participation in major international conferences in 2023, such as RSCy2023, EGU2023, ECSS2023, Aeolus Science Conference 2023, 3rd Lidar International Workshop, and EAC2023.

The project ran between 2020 and 2023.
